Scope 1: In 2023, there was a 6.9% reduction in Scope 1 emissions, primarily due to the decreased consumption of fuel oil in the pulp and paper units, thanks to the full operation of the biomass gasification plant at the Puma unit, and the reduced natural gas consumption in the recycled units. Additionally, throughout the year, tests for using bio-oil in the lime kilns at the Monte Alegre unit began. There were three industrial-scale tests throughout the year, achieving 100% replacement of fuel oil use during equipment operation. Considering the emission intensity of Scopes 1 and 2, our specific emissions decreased from 148 to 142 kgCO2eq/t.
Scope 2: In the same period, we achieved an 11% reduction in emissions related to purchased energy under the “purchase choice” approach by the Company, due to the purchase of 100% renewable energy certificates.
Scope 3: In 2023, Klabin's Scope 3 emissions decreased by 12% compared to 2022. This reduction was mainly due to the decreased GHG emissions from the categories of processing sold products (category 10) due to a 5% reduction in sold products and the update of the secondary emission factor used for processing pulp into tissue. Additionally, there were reductions in emissions from the categories of purchased goods and services (category 1), energy-related activities not included in Scopes 1 and 2 (category 3), downstream transportation and distribution (category 9), and end-of-life treatment of sold products (category 12). It is worth noting that in 2023, Klabin initiated the Value Chain Engagement Program, a program for engaging and developing suppliers and customers relevant in GHG emissions. However, there was no update of secondary data to primary data in 2023.

A significante redução de 53.1 mil tCO2eq do escopo 1 está relacionada, principalmente, à redução do consumo de combustíveis de origem fóssil nas unidades de papel e celulose e nas operações de reciclados. A unidade PUMA operou com a planta de gaseificação de biomassa em um dos seus fornos durante todo ano de 2023, reduzindo o consumo de óleo combustível. Além disso, em 2023, teve o início de testes para uso de bio óleo nos fornos de cal da unidade de Monte Alegre. Foram, ao longo do ano, 3 testes em escala industrial, atingindo 100% de substituição do uso de óleo combustível durante a operação do equipamento. Em 2022, ampliamos a contabilização do escopo 3 e para 2023 tivemos uma redução devido à redução das emissões da categoria de bens e serviços comprados e processamento de produtos vendidos, principalmente, devido à melhoria da qualidade dos dados utilizados e do lançamento do Programa de Engajamento da Cadeia de Valor..
