Production and logistics
The management and execution of operational and logistics planning are material topics that are part of Klabin’s strategic sustainability roadmaps, and their objectives are aligned with the Company’s growth plan up to 2030. Integration between areas and units has always been important to the development of strategic planning and a major competitive advantage for Klabin. Prioritized initiatives contribute to streamlining operating costs, maximizing value for clients and supporting Klabin’s global expansion, optimizing its own resources and processes as well as those of its partners.
Klabin’s integrated planning seeks to increase response speed, to optimaze the use of plant´s resources and to improve customer service. Although already well established, the Sales & Operations Planning (S&OP) process continues to evolve, guiding the implementation of new work routines and tools, promoting integration between the commercial and production areas and providing a comprehensive view of the value chain.
To reduce environmental impacts such as pollutant emissions, to improve productivity and seek eficiency gains as the Puma II Project advances (with the startup of Paper Machine 27 and run-up of Paper Machine 28), the Company has worked on the following initiatives in recent years:
• KBT Terminal: In 2022, the Company constructed and ramped up this multimodal container terminal. The facility has road and rail access and features three state-of-the-art rubber-tired gantry cranes. It can store up to 2,500 containers and is capable of handling up to 5,000 containers per month. This entire structure is essential for enabling and consolidating Klabin as one of Brazil’s largest container shippers.
• PAR-01: Located at the Port of Paranaguá in Paraná, the Klabin Port Terminal (known as PAR-01) can handle up to 1 million metric tons of pulp per year and is part of a BRL 1 billion investment made by the Company in recent years in infrastructure in the state of Paraná. Thanks to this terminal, all the short-fiber pulp, long-fiber pulp, fluff pulp and paper from the Company’s Ortigueira and Monte Alegre plants can now be unloaded at the Port of Paranaguá. PAR-01 also enhances Klabin’s productivity and competitiveness in breakbulk (loose cargo) transportation – a method in which cargo is loaded directly in the ships’ holds without using containers. This operation also delivers environmental benefits, such as reducing the route traveled by approximately 1,200 truck trips per day of vessel operation, which significantly lowers CO₂ emissions and eases traffic on the city’s highways, as all cargo movement takes place within the port area. The terminal is equipped with solar panels that generate approximately 270 MWh per year, making its energy production more sustainable and reinforcing Klabin’s commitment to its sustainability agenda, while also improving operational efficiency.
