Klabin is a forest-based Company with responsible management and a commitment to biodiversity. Accordingly, five of the 23 targets of Klabin’s Sustainable Development Goals are focused on the preservation and conservation of flora and fauna (https://klabin.com.br/sustentabilidade/agenda-klabin-2030).
The quality of its business is directly linked to conserving biodiversity and the ecosystem services it provides. Consequently, Klabin employs mosaic planting, interspersing pine and eucalyptus forests with expanses of native trees, which account for almost half of its forestlands. This practice creates ecological corridors and protects habitats. The Company also monitors roadkill on 8,000 km of roads near its operations and develops technologies aimed at controlling invasive species that can affect local biodiversity balance. In addition, it has a zero-deforestation policy and a policy of zero conversion of native forests into tree plantations.
The Company maintains more than 18,000 hectares of High Conservation Value Areas and Private Nature Reserves on its properties. For example, Fazenda das Nascentes, a property that forms part of the Serra da Farofa Private Nature Reserve in Santa Catarina, has FSC® certifications for three ecosystem services: biodiversity conservation (ES1), carbon sequestration and storage (ES2), and watershed services (ES3).
This set of actions is linked to Klabin’s sustainable finance strategy, based on an approach to debt that is tied to environmental commitments and biodiversity targets.
All the Company’s forests are certified under the FSC® and PEFC standards.
Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Services Plan
In 2024, Klabin published its Biodiversity Conservation and Ecosystem Services Plan, setting out the Company’s nature-related dependencies, impacts and risks, linking them to its commitments and resilience strategies. The publication follows the recommendations of the Taskforce on Nature-related Financial Disclosures (TNFD), FSC® principles, International Finance Corporation (IFC) guidelines and other relevant standards.
The plan presents Klabin’s commitment to achieving net biodiversity gain, guaranteeing that the impacts of its activities on biodiversity are offset or outweighed by positive contributions:
- through measures taken to avoid and minimize negative impacts;
- through the restoration of affected areas;
- through improvements to the quality of native vegetation;
- through compensation for residual impacts, helping ensure that no loss is permanent.
External commitments
Klabin is a signatory to commitments such as CDP, the Brazilian initiative “Empresas pelo Clima” (“Companies for Climate”), the GHG Protocol, The Forests Dialogue and several international agreements renewed annually through forest management certifications. The CDP Forests Program has recognized the Company as an “A-level” leader, reflecting its commitment to zero deforestation.
Nature Interpretation Center
Opened in March 2019, the Nature Interpretation Center, located in the Serra da Farofa Private Nature Reserve in Santa Catarina, reflects Klabin’s commitment to scientific research and biodiversity conservation. The facility, built in alignment with sustainability principles to minimize its impact on the local ecosystem, can house up to 40 researchers and offers heated dormitories, a cafeteria and study areas. [1][3]
In 2024, as it celebrated its fifth anniversary, the center reaffirmed its strategic role in supporting applied science in the areas of conservation, forestry and forest management. The Private Nature Reserve is home to around 1,000 native species in 5,000 hectares of Atlantic Forest and high-altitude grasslands.
Klabin conducts research to assess and control pests and diseases, focusing on biological solutions. Since 2020, it has been developing a biological-based product to control leafcutter ants.
Forest innovation and technology transfer in forest management are priorities. Klabin evaluates biotic and abiotic factors to determine the allocation of pine and eucalyptus, seeking productivity gains in its plantations in the regions where it has forest expansion projects. The Company also has specialists dedicated to the areas of genetic improvement of eucalyptus and pine, biotechnology and cloning, nutrition and silviculture, ecophysiology, forest protection and wood quality. Additionally, Klabin monitors research on genetically modified species and new biotechnological processes, although it does not use them, maintaining compliance with forest certifications.
With the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR) established as a rule for commercial activities and the export of products disassociated from deforestation, Klabin ensures the traceability of its products. The Company is implementing an automated system that certifies the traceability and sustainable management of its forests and partners at the geographical coordinates level.
It is important to note that Klabin has not historically converted native areas into productive ones (deforestation), in line with the principles of the FSC certification, held by Klabin since 1998.
Please see the company's Zero Deforestation Declaration, which clarifies not only this fact, but also the same commitment extended to the Company's supply chain.
In addition, a multidisciplinary team at Klabin is working on an automated wood traceability project that is due to be tested and finalized in the second half of 2025. With this project, by means of an invoice code or the commercial bill of lading on the ship, the product will have its chain tracked before shipment, via a proprietary system, from production to the forest stand of origin. The lack of deforestation will be proven using geographical coordinates and environmental due diligence carried out in accordance with the requirements established by the EUDR.
Klabin is also in the process of acquiring a digital tool that will conduct a socio-environmental analysis of all the forest stands tracked by invoice, in order to guarantee greater security in meeting the parameters of the regulation before our products enter the European Union market.
Any updates and documents formalizations, including Klabin's EUDR Informative will be publicly disclosed to Klabin's stakeholders.
Additionally to Klabin's Climate Transition Plan, integrated management elements for soil, water and biodiversity help to accelerate the necessary transition towards a sustainable future. For this reason, and also because the most significant greenhouse gas emission factor in Brazil comes from changes in land use caused by deforestation*, Klabin has published its first Nature Transition Plan.
