Since 2017, the Klabin Technology Center has solidified its position as a source of technical and process solutions, investing in technology and equipment to enhance its ability to serve the Company’s business units.
The center’s industrial research and development activities are based on two pillars:
Strengthening of existing businesses, by developing high-quality wood projects, optimizing pulp and paper production, and creating new products;
Exploration of emerging segments, by harnessing multiple uses of wood and developing innovative forest products for the Company’s future portfolio.
In 2024, Klabin maintained its integration with research centers and clients, leveraging its internal infrastructure, which covers the entire process from raw materials to end products, and enables small-scale industrial testing. To balance its technical support for the company’s plants with its research activities, the Klabin Technology Center operated in two shifts, thereby maximizing its resources.
The center’s priorities include the following:
Advances in wood and pulp quality through digital twins and portable near-infrared spectrometers, in partnership with the automation and innovation areas;
Acceleration of the development of special fluff products, increasing the productivity of PineFluff ExCel and testing new industrial grades;
Launch of a wicket bag, a sealable type of packaging, in partnership with the industrial bags unit, while providing vital support for the approval of products made by Paper Machine 28.
In the field of biomaterials, highlights include the resumption of turpentine sales and the partnership with Cedro Têxtil for the development of textile additives based on MFC (microfibrillated cellulose), along with the growing interest in lignin-related developments, which represent an increase in volume—still within our pilot-scale operations—and the advancement of its internal applications. Klabin continues to pursue a more sustainable energy matrix through the efficient use of biomass and strategic partnerships that balance sustainability with financial returns.
The Klabin Technology Center is an important pillar of innovation and sustainable development, which allocates 66% of its investments to the core business (energy supplies and products) and 34% to new materials and innovation, aimed at generating value and strengthening Klabin’s leadership in the sector.
