Klabin's Research, Development, and Innovation front is directly linked to the Company's sustainable growth strategy. In 2023, its focus was on short- and medium-term projects aimed at supporting business operations and optimizing the use of natural resources.

Within these two groups are all research routes working on:

  • Enhancing the development of forest raw materials for pulp, paper, and new materials;
  • Strengthening the optimization of papers and new applications, with a focus on functional barriers;
  • Exploring biorefinery (multiple uses of the forest base), such as lignin, green fuels (crude tall oil, bio-oil, and turpentine);
  • Exploring process optimization in areas such as the environment, reuse of products generated in the process, and reduction of water, energy, and steam consumption;
  • Exploring nanotechnology – fractions of cellulose at micro or nanoscale and application in new products.

The prioritized initiatives during the period were aimed at promoting the circular economy, developing solutions to reduce the use of fossil-based products, improving wood quality, and, most importantly, achieving operational efficiency gains.
