Own areas certified

The certification process is firmly established at Klabin's forestry units and, over time, continues to yield excellent results from third-party audits, which recognize the continuous evolution of the quality of operational processes and compliance with the relevant laws and standards.

Chain of Custody and internal audits

The primary purpose of the chain of custody (CoC) is to enable forest-based products to be traced through all the processes, from the forest to the customer, to ensure their sustainable origin, by the strict FSC® and PEFC certification standards.

For controlled wood, Klabin carries out a quarterly Risk Assessment on the supplying properties, carried out by its team of qualified professionals who keep up-to-date on regulatory standards. This due diligence system assesses documentary issues in 100% of vendors, in addition to on-site inspections. Any discrepancies found are escalated for treatment and lead to the suspension of the partner's wood supply in the system until changes are implemented.

SLIMF FSC® standard

Klabin supports producers in achieving Small and Low Intensity Managed Forest (SLIMF) certification, in partnership with FSC® Brazil and other relevant civil society organizations. Work began in 2013 when the Certification Program for Forest Producers was implemented. In 2014, after the approval of the standard by FSC® International, the Company started a pilot project that certified 41 forest partners from the Forest Producers Group of Médio Tibagi. In 2023, 240 farmers already had their properties certified in the states of Paraná and Santa Catarina.

Geoprocessing and fire prevention measures

Klabin maintains a forestry security structure to prevent fires, and illegal deforestation by third parties and to protect fauna and flora, curbing the actions of predatory hunters and fishermen, invasions, and other incidents. This front has a structure consisting of mobile patrols, control towers, and communication equipment for permanent monitoring of forest areas, totaling 763,600 hectares of protected areas in Paraná, Santa Catarina, and São Paulo.

In addition, the Company uses geotechnologies and remote sensors to obtain information on its forestry assets, which allows it to constantly monitor its forests and operations, including third-party properties. Planet, LiDAR, and ESRI Platform technologies are applied in this process.

The acquisition of images through Planet allows for the monthly monitoring of biological assets, including conservation areas, which favors the model adopted by Klabin for landscape management. The application of LiDAR technology provides digital models of forests, which make it possible to track and monitor their evolution. This data is processed by the ESRI platform and the results are shared with local communities to support initiatives such as those aimed at territorial resilience to the impacts of climate change.

In 2023, the program underwent prioritization of areas/properties focusing on the Ortigueira region to establish ecological corridors between Klabin areas and Indigenous Lands.

Plante com a Klabin is a Klabin program designed for small, medium, and large rural producers. Within this initiative, they are invited to participate in the company's forest expansion process through the cultivation of pine and eucalyptus and are encouraged to integrate the forest with other activities conducted on their properties. All program participants are also encouraged to join the "Legal Forests" program (which supports the cadastral and environmental regularization of areas) and the Small Producers Certification Program.

Klabin's forestry operations are guided by the principles and criteria of certification. In the current expansion scenario, the inclusion of new areas is done cautiously after evaluation in a rigorous flow of documentation, geospatial information, and field surveys. The strategy adopted for certification is based on the analysis of supply planning that follows the S&OP (Sales and Operations Planning) concept. This process contributes to collaborative planning, with the effective participation of all areas involved.

Forest certification management

Klabin values obtaining certifications from independent organizations that assure quality, attest to the credibility of its products, and reaffirm its commitment to continuous improvement. They are also a sign of adherence to the best social and environmental responsibility practices adopted in processes and products.

The certifications reaffirm the Company's pioneering spirit in meeting customer needs and anticipating market trends.

Klabin was the first company in the sector in the Southern Hemisphere to receive FSC® (FSC-C022516) – Forest Stewardship Council® certification for its forestry areas, in 1998. It was also the first in the world to have certified non-timber forest products, which certifies the origin of the raw material used in its manufacturing process.

In 2017, the Paraná Forestry Unit achieved the Cerflor certification (Brazilian Forest Certification Program), accredited by Inmetro and internationally recognized by PEFC license code (PEFC/28-23-19). In 2023, certification was extended to the Santa Catarina units (PEFC/28-22-15) and, in 2024, the cycle of PEFC-certified areas will end with the Angatuba unit.

This commitment extends throughout the production chain, with the encouragement and guidance given to partners in the Plant with Klabin program to obtain certification supported by the Small and Medium Producer Certification Program, whose FSC® standard has been adapted to the local context.
